FIT
‘nSPIRATIONS: BEING HOOKED ON STAYING
FIT
By Catherine Niski
HARWICH,
Mass., May 23, 2006 -
- The rainy
days of Spring hardly dampen the spirits at Fit ‘N Run, the 30-minute circuit
and fitness center for women in East Harwich. In fact, rain or shine members
insist every day is a great day to work out and stay fit. Six months after
opening its doors in October 2005, Fit ‘n Run’s membership is reaching 400. I stopped
in to see for myself how the 30-minute circuit center was helping women reach
their health and fitness goals. Check out their stories and judge for yourself.
“When I was growing up,” chuckled Ruth
Baggs, “I never owned a bicycle and hula hoops weren’t invented yet.” Hard to
imagine, isn’t it? Yet Ruth would not miss her BodyFIT Cycling or Strong Women
classes at Fit ‘n Run. About three years
ago, a neighbor introduced Baggs to fitness classes at the
At that time, Baggs had fulfilled her
livelong goal to retire on the
Fast forward to May – Baggs attributes her
improved strength and flexibility to continuing those workouts at Fit ‘n Run and
discovering the weighted hula hoop, which moved her belt buckle from the first
notch out to five notches in! For her, the evidence is clear that it took
inches off her waistline, strengthened her muscles and simply makes her feel
great. If you’re looking for her, you’ll find her in the cycling class, where
she works out three times a week, or lifting 12-pound weights in strength
training. When I asked what advice she would give to her peers, she smiled,
“Just try it!”
What seems to be most important to every
member is personal goal setting and achievement in a supportive atmosphere. “I
enjoy the personable, friendly staff and have never met anyone in class or at
the center, who treated me like I don’t belong there,” said Baggs emphatically.
Karen Ready, owner of Fit ‘n Run, says, “I couldn’t be prouder of Ruth. She is
a FIT ‘nSpiration for all of us!”
Janice Clarke, a busy professional running
a day care, told me the best part of her day is working out at Fit ‘n Run. “I
had tried other gyms and 30-minute circuits. I wasn’t sure I wanted to try
again, but my husband’s company received a membership discount at Fit ‘n Run,
so I took a chance.” I asked her what makes it different from the others.
“The extended hours are perfect for me,”
responded Clarke. “I started slowly on the 30-minute circuit by going in the
evenings. Later, as my business grew, I easily changed my workout schedule to
6:30 am. Now I look forward to getting up, going in and getting it done in 30
minutes consistently every day. The people and the staff are supportive and
interactive, and the place is bright, clean, upbeat and positive.” She
confessed that the best part is knowing she has accomplished something for
herself before her busy day gets started.
However, does all that exercise pay off? “It
absolutely works,” said Clarke. “Combined with applying common sense to eating
right, I lost the weight and inches I wanted, while maintaining a healthy
balance.” She also attended one of Fit ‘n Run’s free HealthFIT seminars on
nutrition that validated the healthy eating habits she set for herself.
What would she share with her peers? “It’s
like going out with the girls, but not having the hassle of setting it up and
calling everyone. They’re already there and we can share stories while we get
fit. If you try it, you’ll be hooked.”
